A Brief History of Lewis-Palmer

The Lewis-Palmer School District is the product of a 1948 consolidation between Lewis School District #5 in Monument and Palmer Lake School District #33. Both districts were founded in the late 1800s, serving grades 1 through 8.

In 1920, the first local high school was built in Monument, named “The Lewis School” after Palmer Lake teacher Inez Johnson Lewis. Palmer Lake students began attending the Monument school, leading ultimately to the merger of the two districts. Adding District #33 to District #5 provided a new district number—#38, and Lewis-Palmer School District has ever since included a hyphen in its name. The original high school building is now home to the LPSD administration offices, known locally as “Big Red” at 146 Jefferson Street.

Several one-room school houses were scattered throughout what is now District 38. The Pine Grove School is one of those school houses, currently preserved at Kilmer Elementary and included in student studies of pioneer life in Colorado.

In 1921, The Lewis School had just one graduating senior. Today LPSD serves more than 6,000 students on nine campuses. The Lewis School began as a premier leader in local education, and Lewis-Palmer successfully maintains that reputation as one of the top school districts in Colorado.
